18th Century Portrait of Israel Lee

Artist Unknown

Isreal Lee was a pertinent figure in the Battle of Monmouth. This 26" x 23" painting was torn and dirty, the canvas old and brittle, in need of dire attention. The paint layer, brittle, cracked and cupping.

Our Treatment Proposal

The following treatment plan was agreed upon with the client.

The old discolored varnish was removed, a Paraloid resin was applied to the surface of the painting to provide structural support to the cracked paint layer.

The paint layer was chemically treated to soften the brittle paint layer and avoid breakage during vacuum hot table treatment, bringing the painting back to plane.  The tear was repaired with the bridging technique, filled and in-painted. The tack edge was strip-lined and the painting re-stretched back onto the original strainer.
